Composed between 1697 and 1704, the Requiem by Jean Gilles, master of music at the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne in Toulouse, remains his most famous work, very fashionable throughout the 18th century, especially during the Parisian concerts of Le Concert Spirituel of Les Tuileries. The great motet Louis quatorzien, gradually lost its liturgical function but remained very popular in concert.
